Headlight repair
A couple months ago I wrote about my own city bike, and noted that the lights have worked for years without fail. Well, yesterday I noticed that my headlamp was dead. So I repaired it.

Snow FR8
Rick Wilson of Café Vélo in Portland, Oregon sent me this pic of his snowy WorkCycles FR8. Its one of three FR8’s in the USA, and was actually the very first Cross-frame made. The other two FR8’s are at Clever Cycles (possibly available to purchase).[Show as slideshow] Rick writes: “In accordance with proper snow driving guidelines i [...]

Guest post: Experiences with Faya4you bakfiets
Today I received the following message from a woman in Haarlem (a very lovely and old city near Amsterdam for which the Harlem of New York is named for). Her story is about her terrible experiences with an inexpensive family tricycle from the firm Faya4You in the Netherlands. Its a “bakfiets” though not to be [...]

Fresh cycling statistics from the Netherlands
These statistics about cycling just in from the Dutch RAI, “branch organization for mobility”… There are 19.1 million two-wheelers in the Netherlands (and 16.4 million people). This includes 634,000 motorcycles and about 500,000 mopeds and scooters, thus about 18,000,000 bicycles. Of course could pretty much guess this just by looking at the bicycle covered streets of [...]

CXS Train Advertisement
Until we can move a ton of goods using no fuel, we’ve got the next best thing. CSX trains can move a ton of goods 423 miles on one gallon of fuel. CSX: How tomorrow moves. Its great to be promoting train transport, though one can interpret the bicycle cargo example either as the reasonable illustration [...]

Some Americans do “get it”
If the rather unglamorous background of a Ford Econoline box van with Washington state license plate didn’t give her location away you’d think Jill Keto was in Amsterdam or Copenhagen. WorkCycles Omafiets: check. Personalized with red fenders, basket and flowers: check. Stylishly dressed in heels, skirt and scarf: check. Mobile phone glued to ear: check. [...]

Sinterklaas Arrival Parade with WorkCycles Bakfietsen
[Show as slideshow] 12►The Sinterklaas “Intocht” (arrival parade) needs no introduction for the locals who began chasing Sinterklaas and his many “Zwarte Pieten”along the Amstel river and through the streets of Amsterdam as toddlers. It goes as follows (please forgive me for the semi-accurate description - I’m only after the basics idea here): Sinterklaas is the Dutch [...]

Trippen “Shoes Garage” Sale
60% off our favorite shoes from Trippen! This has pretty much nothing to do with bicycles but our friends Ben and Geraldine have decided to close their Amsterdam shoe shop “Shoes Garage” to move onto other ventures. Thus they’re blowing out the complete Trippen shoes collection. You’re probably not familiar with Trippen. They’re a tiny firm [...]

Kyoko’s Bakfiets Cargobike
Keeping with the spirit of “practice what you preach” its to be expected that Kyoko and I would be transporting our son Pascal around in a Bakfiets Cargobike. We actually considered bringing him home from the hospital in a bakfiets but figured we’d just be tired and Kyoko would have no interest in sitting on [...]

WorkCycles and Bakfiets.nl win Kassa bakfiets comparison test
Yesterday “Kassa” (cash register) the popular, prime-time, Dutch consumer program broadcast their test of family bakfietsen. Like some other consumer-rights organizations Kassa reports are widely regarded as quite reliable and honestly conducted. Despite my usual cynicism I felt the testing procedure they showed was quite rigorous utilizing two professional experts and a panel of experience [...]

WorkCycles Jordaan vestiging is nu echt open
[Show as slideshow] Na enkele maanden van verbouwing is onze prachtige 2e vestiging in de gezellige Jordaan (Lijnbaansgracht 32-B) nu open. Henry’s own daily ride
[Show as slideshow] You’ve probably never even thought about what bike the owner of WorkCycles rides every day. Fortunately that won’t stop me from showing you anyway. So here it is, in all its unwashed glory, plucked right from the street for its own, unglamourous photo shoot. I left the lock on the handlebars because I [...]

Hand-made: 1925 films of the Gazelle bike factory
2007: Aluminium frames being welded for Azor Bike I recently spotted some bullshit about the difference between “hand-built” and “hand-made” on some site or blog promoting somebody’s bikes, or maybe it was just a blog comment. Huh? I’ve been designing and making (often pretty nice) things with my own hands for many years and have [...]
