Cycling can be both recreation and transportation, often at the very same time. That has seemed to be its greatest strength.

re: Consider the Toe Clip

I am 61 and have taken up biking to replace running.

I tried to go to the cleats but fell a few times and I now have a fear of riding. I was using the toe clips which came with my bike and had no fear - it was just difficutl getting into them with sneakers on.

Your comments have been helpful as I now am considering returning to the toe clips (with maybe touring shoes?).

The new fancy-schmancy lacing systems using aramid cord and various locking systems actually have no bulk to impede entry into a toeclip. They're just bitchin' expensive.

We'll see what comes along.

I've been going back and forth between toe straps, which I like, and which use ordinary shoes, and clipless pedals with pricey shoes, which I don't like, particularly. I felt driven to the clipless equipage because that's what all the "serious" cyclists use. With your explication, i feel comfortable being a little less serious and a lot more comfortable.

One day, for example, it would be nice if Shimano made an internally geared hub that worked, something that Rohloff and Sram can both do. My Shitmano 8 speed hub lasted 5Mm before being replaced, and their "suggestion" was ... don't ride the bike so hard. The SRAM Cargo 5 speed is still going strong and my Rohloff has never given me any trouble, albeit it's only about 10Mm old.

Shimano chain... good for a laugh. Rohloff and Sram both make chains that actually survive a bit of use, when the Shimano ones start poppingn side plates after a few thousand kms. Bah!

re: Product Review: Rudy Project Ekynox

Some models use the prescription in the frame. I liked being able to change lenses. particularly useful commuting when I might not have sunlight all the way home, or if the weather changes during the ride.
